'06 Duramax, Speal at 1200RPM

I tried to post at http://www.thedieselgarage.com/ but am having trouble.
Can any of you mechanical gurus point me in the right direction?
06 Duramax with 40,000 miles.
Squeal at 1200rpm accelerating or decelerating.
Sometimes but not often "Battery Not Charging" light comes on.
Seems to NOT be happening during damp or rainy weather.
This has been going on for roughly 10,000 miles.
I took it too the dealer the other day. He said the belt has some hot spots on it and the computer is calling for a generator. Dealer wants $700.00 +/-
I find that troubling on a 40,000 mile vehicle.
If I read the manual right it says replace the belt at 150,000 miles unless it shows wear earlier.
What do you think?

If you need a Cheap Genny

Last week after discussing Honda genny I bought a Champion for $300.00 at Tractor Supply. Worked great, and I can buy three for the price of the Honda.
If you need one, Aldi is selling what must be a Champion Generator next week for $199.00. The only difference is 3250 watts and NO RV Plug. Looks exactly like the Champ but red tank and trim...CHEAP.
Good luck.

RE: Hnda Generator, why do I need the Quiet Inverter model

And I meant to say...the folks at Champion were very helpful when finally asked where I could get one and some other questions. Like it. Thanks Champion.

I bought the Champ! Started second pull. Running like a scalded dog right now. Everybody happy but my neighbors...kiding. I will not be a generator snob. Only when necessary. Thanks for all the input.

RE: Hnda Generator, why do I need the Quiet Inverter model

WEll, I like that Champion. Now I need to find one on the East Coast, or better yet within 100 miles of AVL. Thx
Horseplay: Davidson River is one of our favorite places. Dont need a generator there though. We want to go to beach this weekend (James Island Count Park, Charleston) and cant find FHU. Overflow is a big field in the open and thats ok but may need AC. Its time to get genny anyway. Not having genny has stopped us from going to a few places this year.

RE: Hnda Generator, why do I need the Quiet Inverter model

I wonder if I could change the muffler on it? Or make a tent type noise deflector...
I see your point about noise.
What about theft too..some fool might borrow the thing when I go away and leave the pooch cooling it in the T...come back to hot dog!
Getting more difficult!
Thanks for replies.

Hnda Generator, why do I need the Quiet Inverter model

I want a Generator for use with my TT. My concern is AC in hot locations.
I was about to buy the Honda 3000isA. It is super quiet, and has an inverter.
But, it is about 700.00 more than similarly rated generators. The difference is the Inverter and the DBs.
I can get almost the same generator in the EB 3000cKAG for $1349.00, at least 600.00 less.
The difference is that the EB model is 10 db louder, smaller gas tank and no Inverter. Not to mention the EB model is 66 pounds lighter!
My Dutchman has an Inverter, So, Why spend the extra money?

What if I connect the two?
And, what is the difference between Deep Cycle and RV?
Thx

New Orleans, late March...Campground suggestions?

Going to be in NO late march on business. Thinking about taking family and TT instead of flying and hotel. We like the open-ness and remote feel of state and federal campgrounds.
Any suggestions close to NO? The business location is Sheraton Canal St but I only need to be there max two days.
Thx

RE: Bed Extender, what do you think?

coolbreeze...to carry my junk. Bikes, firewood, fishing tackle, all the stuff we carry around.
I could get a bike rack for back of tt that would carry 4.
I was thinking gate down and get all my stuff in the truck.
Gate up and a bike rack and I have it figured out.
When not towing, Extender, Sideboards and gate down and I have more payload than long box.
The power of the Forum! Thanks all. I can buy a Short Bed Monday!

RE: Bed Extender, what do you think?

4X4 for mountainous terrain for firewood ( I heat home with it )
I need to figure out if I can tow with gate down. I could try that with current machine.
Sideboards might give give me the same capacity as the extender. At least for wood and mulch. Would not be much help when we load up for camping with Bikes, Grill, wood and other important freight.
Any mathemeticians out there?

Bed Extender, what do you think?

Having trouble finding a Long Bed, Crew Cab, Diesel, 4x4 (as you might imagine).
I have been thinking about getting a short and putting in a Bed Extender like this. http://www.truckcandy.com/TC/BedExtender/bed-extender.htm
My main reasons for wanting long is that it is common for me to haul fire wood and mulch several times a year and I dont want to make more trips.
The extender would make the tailgate useful.
As far as camping/towing. I THINK I could tow my TT using Extender w tail gate down. I woul have max use of bed this way for camping too.
What are your thoughts?
I know if I "settled" for short I could be in a decent truck next week. Waiting for long may be months.
Trying not to buy new. New is $42000 +/- for what I want and I CAN but dont want to go new. Lots of used Shorts available.

Depreciation on New TV

Thinking about buying new GM Duramax, Long Bed, 4X4, Crew, Leather,,etc.
No problem keeping this truck for the duration.
MSRP 46,900.00
I can buy it for $40,776.00 out the door.
Is depreciation figured on what I pay, or MSRP.
What could this truck be worth in 6 years with 120,000 miles?

RE: Does the fridge usually use SOME power when on LP?

2-way RV fridges operate using one of two power sources for heating the ammonia solution used for cooling the interior:
1) 120VAC, or
2) Propane
The control board itself requires 12VDC from the house batteries and/or converter to run. If your house batteries are low and you are not on AC to run the converter, your fridge will not operate, even if you have full propane tanks.
The Auto mode puts the fridge to detect if electricity is available and, if so, to "favor" using the AC heating element over the propane burner.
The Propane mode overrides the sensing and uses only propane for
heati
The moisture control switch operates a purely electric (120VAC) heating element (if available)
Hope this helps.
Re Moisture Control: you say "purely electric 120 vac heating element...
We like to boondock this time of year, but we need the furnace some at night. I think my fridge (norcold in a 2006 Duthcman 258gl) is using the DC to keep moisture control working. I cant get more than one night from my group 24 battery.
Testing here at home I have run the furnace for two nights WITHOUT the refer on and the battery is still very high.
I have called manufacturer and they say I cant turn off the refer heater but I did not think to ask if it was DC or AC or both.
I just turned the refer on GAS ONLY...lets see if that changes things. Maybe if it is GAS ONLY it wont use the refer heater.
Shopping now for best battery to add to group 24.

Frustrated Trying to buy TV. Dissapointed n Dodge Test Drive

I thought I found the right TV. I went today to test drive a new Dodge after all the great posts here and a couple of friends.
I have been looking for a Long Bed, Crew Cab, 4X4.
I get in the back of the "crew cab" and my knees hit and the bench seat is too short. I am told that I need Mega if I stay with Dodge, but Mega it does not come in Long Box.
I really liked the way it drove and handled.
However, I commonly have three other adults with me so I dont want them to be cramped in the back.
Chevy drivers: are they real Crew Cabs? Any problems with late model Duramax?
Ford drivers: I had a 97 PSD which I assume is nothing like the 6.0s I have read about here. What Fords could I buy and not have this problem.
I dont care much about the brand...but I do care that I am going to spend a ton of dough, so I should get what I want: Comfortable seating (plush, maybe leather) Long Bed, 4X$ and pull my TT up a phone pole.
Your suggestions appreciated.

RE: Have you ever bought a car from Carmax?

I just drove a new one with SLT trim package. The upholstery feels kind of low end for such a nice truck. I want to feel like I wrapped in luxury for that kind of money and half the time I am in a suit, so want to feel like I look good...
Otherwise seems like a great truck. Cant believe the get up and go!
I sat in a Laramie version, now that baby is nice...but a ton more green.
